Measure Vocabulary Complexity by Word Length
Word length is one of the quickest proxies for text difficulty. Longer words tend to be rarer, more technical, and harder to parse. This calculator gives you the average, median, and full distribution of word lengths in your text, plus lists of the longest and shortest words so you can decide where to simplify.
Average vs Median
The average (mean) sums all word lengths and divides by the word count. A single very long word can pull the average up. The median is the length of the middle word when all words are sorted by length — it is not affected by outliers. If the average is noticeably higher than the median, you have a few unusually long words inflating the statistic, which may be fine if they are necessary technical terms.
What the Distribution Tells You
The bar chart groups words by character count. In most English prose, the peak is at 3 to 5 characters. A heavy tail beyond 8 characters indicates dense, formal, or technical language. Compare your distribution to your target audience: marketing copy should cluster at the short end, while research papers naturally extend further right.
Connection to Readability Formulas
The Coleman-Liau Index and Automated Readability Index (ARI) both use characters per word instead of syllables per word. By checking your average word length here, you get a direct input for those formulas. A one-character increase in average word length can shift the estimated grade level by two or more grades in the ARI, which shows how sensitive readability scores are to vocabulary complexity.
Practical Editing Tips
Scan the"Longest words" list and ask two questions for each word: is there a shorter synonym, and does the audience know this word? Replace"utilize" with"use,""approximately" with"about," and"implement" with"apply" where precision is not lost. Keep domain-specific terms that have no simpler equivalent, but add a brief explanation on first use if the audience is mixed.
