AEO Content Scorer — How It Works
AEO — AI Engine Optimization — is the practice of structuring your content so AI models cite it when answering user queries. Unlike traditional SEO, which optimizes for search engine rankings, AEO optimizes for being the source an AI engine quotes, links, or paraphrases in its response.
Why AEO matters now
In 2025-2026, AI-powered answer engines have fundamentally changed how people find information. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot don't just list links — they synthesize answers from multiple sources and cite the ones they trust most.
This means being on page one of Google is no longer enough. If an AI engine answers the user's question directly and doesn't cite your content, the user never sees your site. AEO ensures your content is the one being cited.
What makes content AI-citable
AI engines prefer content that is structured, factual, and direct. They favor definition-lead paragraphs that answer a question in the first sentence, then elaborate. They quote content with specific numbers, dates, and research citations over vague claims.
Structure matters enormously. Headers that match common queries, numbered lists, comparison tables, and FAQ sections are all formats AI engines can easily extract and quote. Walls of text with no clear structure get skipped even when the information is good.
The five scoring criteria
This tool evaluates your content on five dimensions that research from Princeton and CMU has identified as key factors in AI citation: direct answer format, entity clarity, citation-friendly structure, factual density, and authority signals.
Each dimension is scored 0-20, giving you a total out of 100. The breakdown shows exactly where your content is strong and where it loses citation potential, with specific fixes you can implement immediately.
How to use your AEO score
A score below 40 means your content is unlikely to be cited by any AI engine in its current form. Between 40-70, you have a foundation but need structural or factual improvements. Above 70, your content is well-positioned for AI citation — focus on the specific weaknesses flagged.
The most impactful fix is usually structural: adding a direct-answer lead paragraph that answers the target query in 1-2 sentences. AI engines overwhelmingly prefer content that front-loads the answer rather than burying it after an introduction.
